Requirements for AnalyseWorks
- What type of computing platform does it need?
- AnalyseWorks is written in Microsoft Access and runs on Microsoft Windows 98, 2000, and XP.
The databases holding your data can be held locally on your PC, or more typically on a network via ODBC (Oracle, SQL Server etc).
How much data can it analyse?
- Each database it analyses is known as a data mart.
A data mart is typically a few thousand to a few hundred thousand rows, maybe a million or two.
Typically a data mart would be from 10 megabytes to a few gigabytes of data.
It is not aimed at very large databases.
How should the data be structured?
- In all but the simplest cases, data will be extracted from operational systems into a data mart.
Each data mart is based around a business concept - a sale, a test etc.
Each small business or department would typically have one or a small handful of datamarts.
See the Setup section for more details.
What expertise is required?
- No particular expertise is required for 'data users' - they run queries previously defined.
People that can explore the data and set up new queries must understand the business,
be able to spot if a query is generating unexpected data (and work out why), and be basically computer literate (excel etc).
To set up a new data mart you will need to understand the data in your operational systems, and have access to some technical expertise; mainly the ability to write Visual Basic for Applications
code, or database procedures; alternatively GroupWorks can do the work for you.
